Every Bitter Thing Is Sweet
Interior book design

In Every Bitter Thing Is Sweet, Hagerty weaves fabric from the narrative of her life into the mosaic of a Creator who mends broken stories. Here you see a God who is present in every challenging circumstance. Most significantly, you see a God who is present in every unchanging circumstance as well. -- Every Bitter Thing Is Sweet
For a beautiful and sensitive book, I was tasked to create a sensitive and subtle design that would best carry and honor her words. To do so, I choose Bembo typeface to carry the body of her text. Bembo has a smaller x-height and I particularly admire the shape of the letterforms; yet the variety of this font is substantial enough to support the versatility of the text. I continued the use of Requiem Small Caps in the chapter titles. Requiem has particulary beautiful letter shapes, but is not a suitable font for extended reading. To complement the beautiful shapes of the serifed Requiem, I choose Poetica to use sparingly in chapter numbers and in ornaments. Poetica is more calligraphy based and features many beautiful swashes or flourishes. Overall, the effect is subtle and beautiful, allowing plenty of space for the text to breath and come alive.
